Mouth guards are offered in many styles and price ranges. Stock mouth guards are usually available in most sporting goods stores and department stores. This type is preformed, bulky and the fit cannot be adjusted much. They can make speaking and breathing difficult. Dr. McCaffery does not recommend stock mouth guards because they do not provide much protection. Boil and bite mouth guards are also available in sporting goods stores. The mouth guard is placed in hot water to soften and then is molded around the teeth. Custom-fitted mouth guards are specially designed in the dental office. Impressions of your teeth are made so the mouth guard can be custom made. These mouth guards provide the best fit, comfort, and protection.
